Mary Bruce was the third eldest sister of king Robert.
She was captured by the English at Tain,trying to escape to Orkney,alongside her her brother Nigel and the Earl of Atholl,they had been betrayed by the Earl of Ross.
Mary when captured was treated in a much harsher manner,reportedly because she had made derogatory remarks regarding king Edward.
Mary was confined in a strong latticed cage of timber and iron no bigger than six foot in height and the same in width,and hung over the walls of Roxburgh Castle for all to gaze upon summer and winter for four years.
She survived and returned to Scotland after Bannockburn,Mary married Sir Neil Campbell whom died in 1315,a widow she went on to marry again,a man in the name of Sir Alexander Fraser. |
