Artizans
Time: 0930am

Renton Station has been named as the Best Adopted Station in Scotland of
2010 by Passenger Focus, the independent passenger watchdog.
The award follows the transformation of a disused booking office by
Strathleven Artizans into a spectacular heritage cente in tribute of Robert
the Bruce who spent his last three years (1326-9) at Renton.
Strathleven Artizans, a group of volunteers who seek to promote the history
of Renton village and in particular its most famous resident, King Robert
Bruce, have:
• Decorated the building with the fabulous Bannockburn Ceiling by
artist Duncan Brown
• Assembled a display of medieval artefacts, and:
• Created an educational opportunity for school classes to dress up in
medieval costumes, armour and helmets while learning about the history of
Scotland’s greatest warrior king.
Strathleven Artizans’ work, undertaken via ScotRail’s Adopt a Station
scheme which aims to put stations at the heart of communities, has now been
recognised by Passenger Focus.

Strathleven Artizans for the remarkable transformation of surplus space
into an educational resource.”
Robert Samson, Passenger Focus Scottish Link Manager said: "Renton is a
wonderful example of turning round an empty station building to provide an
excellent educational resource. Congratulations to the Artisans for their
efforts and enthusiasm in making the Robert the Bruce Heritage Centre at

Notes to Editors
ScotRail’s Adopt a Station scheme seeks to put stations at the heart of
their communities by encouraging individuals or groups to put forward
proposals on uses for vacant accommodation or introduce and maintain floral
displays. Since launched in September 2005, the scheme has gone from
strength to strength - with 108 stations now benefitting from floral
displays maintained by volunteers. Other initiatives include spectacular
murals, coffee shops, bookshops, a toy library, model railway clubs and
community meeting rooms.
